Q: Can you tell me when you had your first
experience with McLuhan, and what started you on
a life-long exploration of McLuhan and his ideas?
A: I first laid eyes on McLuhan in the fall of 1968,
and I was an undergraduate then at St. Michael’s
College in the University of Toronto. McLuhan had
just come back from a year in New York where he
was teaching at Fordham University, and it was
really the only year that he spent away form the
University of Toronto, basically from the time he
began there as a teacher in 1946 to his stroke in
1979. That was really his home base for the better
part of his career. It was really the height of his
